RE: Repost of Safety Alert

DW insisted on buying bear spray and I told her I did not want any as all I needed to do is outrun her. She was not amused and now I have a pronounced limp.

Save your money and keep heading west, Cleveland is a ****hole place except for Cleveland Clinic and Rock&Roll Hall of Fame is way overrated.

RE: lance generator compartment floor pan

I got real lucky, I had a honda 2000 in that compartment and drove across country and back only to discover large crack in plastic that I thought was metal. Lucky I did not lose generator or cause accident. I have since fitted in a 3/4 inch piece of plywood and it is now secure.
Cheers

Water in diesel

We are preparing to leave soon for alaska and have read some horror stories about engines ruined by bad diesel. what is best way to avoid this? I have changed filters and plan only to stop at major truck stops. Anything else I can do to prevent trouble?
thanks

RE: Ladder Bike Rack

Got my ladder bike rack from Cabella's. Been on two long trips with it and had no problems. I threw away their inferior straps and use bungee cords to secure bikes

Radio reception

We are leaving for Alaska in July and being a news "junky" I was wondering if there is any public radio broadcast that far north.
Would a portable short wave model work? I am too cheap to go the sirus route. Thanks

RE: Alaska at today's fuel price

We just purchased a Prius and are weighing taking that and leaving TC at home and tent camping when weather permits. And if you believe that I want to sell you a hunting vacation with Dick Cheney.

RE: Alaska at today's fuel price

I was hoping for lots of people staying home, means uncrowded campgrounds, fewer idiots on the road. We have paid for our ferry ride back from Alaska so I guess we are committed to going. I told the kids their inheritance might be smaller, but I plan on driving our diesel truck under 1500rpms for max mileage.
We are driving from Ohio and will end up in Reno before we head home.
I feel badly for ordinary working people with these fuel prices, thank god our kids are raised and house is paid for, otherwise I would not be so glib about the mess this country is sliding into.

RE: Anybody Canceling Trips Because Of Fuel Prices?

still planning 7500 mile plus alaska trip although I am concerned about diesel supply. Will pay price as this may be our first and last trip to Alaska. Still better than being on those tacky cruise ships and I don't have to pretend to be interested in boring conversations at dinner time.

RE: Economics of traveling by TC

We just sold our 11 year old civic that we bought new which had 166k miles on it and bought a prius which is an incredible car. Our problem now is we have pre-paid for our ferry ride in Alaska which was over $2400 and am wondering what the hell diesel will cost in late July?
Figure trip will encompass 9k plus miles. Wish that TC of ours would fit on prius. Am considering cancelling trip, hate getting ripped off by oil companies.

RE: Torklift vs Happijack tiedown systems

I purchased the tork-lift system for our truck and have traveled many miles with no problems. I am pleased with engineering of system, very simple and fast. My only complaint is with the stainless steel which starts to show corrossion quickly although it can be removed with polish and waxing.

RE: Full timing in a truck camper?

We have been camped at RV park in Georgia for past 8 days. Never have stayed this long at one spot since purchasing camper last May. Conclusion, we will be here another week and dw asked if we should reserve for next year and I said "no way". Although camper is new and very nice (Lance 915) after our trip to Alaska this summer I plan on either selling or short stays in it only. I find it amazing that people could live for extended periods in a TC. Guess I am getting soft in my old age but I find TC's too confining.

RE: TC'ers Clickish?

I resolve this year to not be offended by those "looks" we get from the class A people. We live on a small farm and our truck is a necessity. We could afford a class A but we found them too cumbersome. We got a full hookup at Jekyll this year only because the big boys cant get their rigs on this site. So we will be among the class "A"'S and I will be Mr. Pleasant. One thing we share in common is the Heineken in fridge LOl.

Alaska highways

Greetings,
Wife and I are planning trip to Alaska next summer and would like someone who has been there with a TC to advise us on what roads are like in mountains. The Mrs. helped with driving last trip coming thru mountains in Nevada she was a little uptight about the narrow road with little berm.
Are there any roads that should be avoided? do they have guardrails on major highways? or is this just something not to worry about?

RE: Couda/Woulda/Shoulda

I have to admit that I am getting spoiled in my old age. My first camper was an 8 footer no a/c or bath and drove it with wife and 6 year old all the way to San Francisco. Came back thru death valley and all this in July of 84.
The truck did not even have a/c, guess I was a lot tougher then LOL. The one thing that has stayed the same is that the people I met over twenty years ago while camping and the ones that I have met this year have been 99% good friendly people. That other 1% (one couple that did'nt see me) rode past our camper on their bikes and called our rig a "wannabe RV". Funny but a little snobby I think, they were staying in a class A.

Couda/Woulda/Shoulda

I purchased a gmc 3500 srw duramax and a lance 915 both new this year. After several trips, last one covering almost 5000 miles, I have decided that I could have chosen a drw and did'nt because I did not think I needed a truck that large. I would like to trade the 915 for a larger camper with at least one slide but cannot because the truck will not carry the load safely. And I should have done more research and homework instead of focusing more on bottom line (keeping total cost under 50k).
We are planning on going to Alaska next year and although this set up will suffice, I regret not looking more closely at other units.
Hope others reading this will benefit from my mistakes and really look over all the options.

Heading West

Well as I posted earlier, we left Ohio 10/19 and are now in Utah. Have not traveled this late in year and got careless in Denver last night and left water and waste lines freeze, what a mess that was to deal with, feel like a real boob on that one.
Traveled I70 thru colorado suprised by all the snow, hope to be in Nevada tomorrow and Reno by Wednesday. TC has performed well (lance 915) Had a lot of good advice on this forum, thanks to all.

RE: Heading west

Thanks all for your input, I think we will stick to main roads. Our truck (GMC 3500 duramax 4x4) should serve us well. Can't post pic of wife, but will say except for a few dings and dents, she looks good for her age.
